Jesus, Horses, and Healing: Inside a Christian Ranch Ministry in Cocoa
Southern Strides founder Christina Langille holds the lead ropes of two horses at the Cocoa ranch, where horses play a central role in helping participants build trust, confidence, and connection.

At this Christian ranch ministry, lives are being changed through the strength of horses and the steadfast hope of biblical truth

As a girl who grew up in the heart of Kentucky, I have always had a special love for horses. So when I heard about a ranch in Brevard County that brings together some of my favorite things—Jesus, horses, and the local community—I was more than eager to learn more.

I recently had the incredible honor of visiting Southern Strides in Cocoa and meeting its founder, Christina Langille. What I discovered there was more than simply encouraging to my faith; it was also a reminder of what it looks like to step out in boldness, love, and courage—just as Southern Strides does for the people of Brevard County.

First Impressions

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the beauty and peace of the property. Horses grazed quietly in the fields, and a warm summer breeze moved through the open barn. There is a calm presence about the ranch that seems to settle over you as soon as you step onto the land. As Christina gave me a tour, she shared the story of how Southern Strides began.

The vision for the ranch was born during a difficult season in her life. Christina was walking through hardship, carrying the weight of unhappiness and illness within her family, when she began asking God what He wanted from her. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, she worked in critical care transport and emergency response, where she witnessed firsthand the effects of trauma, crisis, and deep emotional pain. Over time, she also began to notice how horses brought comfort, reduced anxiety, and offered emotional support not only to her own family, but to others as well.

Christina shared that when her daughter was having frequent panic attacks, a miniature horse named Max became part of her healing journey. Each time panic would rise, she would send her out to walk Max, and through that steady, repeated interaction, the little horse helped her regain peace and stability. With her background in medical care and emergency response, a vision began to take shape: a place where equine-assisted healing and biblical truth could come together to help people navigate trauma and restoration.

Horses rest in their stalls at Southern Strides, where they play an important role in the ranch's ministry of healing and hope.

That calling was deepened through a series of moments she saw as God’s confirmation. Christina shared that she kept seeing the number 3:20 appear repeatedly during one day—even on a vending machine display at the DMV. That night, she connected it to Ephesians 3:20, which became a foundational verse for the ministry:

“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us…”

Through prayer and a deep dependence on the Holy Spirit, she sensed that if this ranch was in God’s will, she needed to take a step of faith and trust Him to provide the way forward. So she did. Even now, as Southern Strides continues to grow, she still sees this work as a calling rather than simply a career.

Why Horses?

Southern Strides is a trauma-healing program that uses horses to support emotional healing, relational growth, and practical life change. It serves a wide range of people, including children, foster and adoptive families, first responders, veterans, couples, and individuals facing anxiety or deep trauma. What makes the ranch distinct is that healing does not happen only through conversation. Clients learn through direct interaction with horses, physical movement, responsibility, and outdoor experiences that help them engage both body and mind in the healing process.

For those who are unfamiliar with horses, it is fair to wonder why they matter so much in this kind of ministry. "Horses offer immediate feedback," Christina explained. "They respond honestly to human energy, fear, frustration, calmness, and body language, which helps clients become more aware of their own emotions and nonverbal communication." Christina shared how horses can reveal what a person may not yet realize about themselves, and caring for them teaches people to stay present. For someone trapped by past trauma or overwhelmed by fear of the future, that present-moment focus can be an important step toward healing.

So What Do People Do at Southern Strides?

One of the most encouraging things for newcomers with no previous equestrian experience is that Southern Strides is not simply about riding horses. Clients first learn the foundations of horsemanship, including communication, care, nutrition, responsibility, and basic equine knowledge. These experiences help build confidence, discipline, and practical skills that carry beyond the ranch itself.

At the same time, Southern Strides does not follow a one-size-fits-all model. "Trauma looks different in every individual and every family, so the approach remains flexible and responsive to what each person brings into the space that day," Christina said.

Southern Strides also offers a variety of specialized programs designed to support healing, growth, and connection across many different populations. Programs include Equine Facilitated Learning, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, and Corporate Team Building. The ranch also offers the Train Like an Equestrian Wellness Program, a holistic program designed to help clients improve their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being through individualized coaching in areas such as fitness, nutrition, stress management, confidence, and healthy lifestyle habits. Through these programs, clients are introduced to many of the same tools used in equestrian training, including barrels, poles, and jumps.

Most importantly, Southern Strides is grounded in biblical truth. Christina shared that some of the people who come to the ranch have been deeply hurt—sometimes even by past experiences connected to church or faith. Because of that, healing often involves more than emotional support alone; it also includes restoring trust, identity, and hope. Southern Strides seeks to offer a place where spiritual healing and emotional healing are not separated, but lovingly brought together. There have been many instances Christina can recall where clients who have arrived with a firm opposition to talk about God have left with a newfound hope in God's love.

The Heart of the Ministry

If there is one message Christina hopes people will take away, it is this:

"Healing was never meant to happen in isolation. If I could give one message to people struggling—do not do it alone."

She spoke about the importance of community and the courage it takes to ask for help. Sometimes one of the strongest things a person can do is simply admit that they cannot carry the burden alone.

That heart is what makes Southern Strides so much more than a beautiful ranch. It is a place where spiritual truth is shared and where people are shown God's love. In a world where so many silently carry fear, grief, and trauma, Southern Strides stands as a powerful testimony to what God can do through faith, compassion, and a willingness to say yes to His calling.
