On the Ballot: Michele McCormack, Candidate for Brevard County School Board District 5
In our “On the Ballot” series, Christians of Brevard is asking local Christian candidates for office five simple questions about faith, leadership, and public service.
Michele McCormack has proudly called Brevard County home for more than 30 years. Raised in a military family, she settled in Palm Bay after her father retired from the Air Force. A graduate of Palm Bay High School, Michele met her husband while working at Sears in Melbourne, and they were married at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. She became Catholic in 2003 and attends Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Melbourne. Michele is also a member of the Council of Catholic Women at Holy Name of Jesus. She has served as a Brevard Public School Teacher for over 20 years.
Why are you running for School Board?
I am running for this seat because I believe every decision should be centered on students and informed by those who work with them every day. My experience in the classroom has shown me what works, what challenges remain, and what our schools need to thrive. Together, we can support our students, empower our educators, and build an even stronger school district. This opportunity is not about one person; it is about our shared responsibility to ensure Brevard Public Schools continues to uphold its mission: “To serve every student with excellence as the standard.”
What does it mean to you to be a Brevard resident?
Brevard is more than where I live, it is where I found my home. Growing up in a military family, I frequently changed schools and communities. When my family settled in Brevard, I finally found a sense of belonging. I attended Southwest Middle School when it first opened, and the teachers there made a lasting impact on my life. They saw potential in me, encouraged me to grow, and opened doors to opportunities I might not have otherwise had. Their dedication inspired me to become an educator, and I am grateful to now give back to the community that helped shape who I am today.
What is the top issue driving your campaign, and what can voters expect you to do about it?
One of my top priorities is strengthening services for students with disabilities and supporting the educators who serve them. As a Teacher of the Deaf, I see firsthand the challenges teachers, students, and families face. Special education teachers need more time to plan and individualize instruction, not more time spent on excessive documentation.
The evaluation process can also be lengthy and confusing for families. During that time, students often lack the supports they need, creating challenges in the classroom and increasing stress for everyone involved. These delays can affect not only the student being evaluated but also the teachers and other students who rely on those services.
While I do not pretend to have all the answers, voters can expect me to listen to educators, families, and specialists, evaluate what is working, and advocate for practical solutions that improve efficiency, reduce unnecessary burdens, and keep the focus where it belongs: supporting students and helping every child succeed.
What is one misconception people may have about you or your platform?
One misconception people may have about me is that, because I am a teacher, I will only advocate for teachers. While I am proud of over 20 years in education, my focus is on what is best for students, families, and our entire school community. Teachers, support staff, parents, and students all have a role in student success. My classroom experience gives me valuable insight, but I am committed to listening to all stakeholders and making decisions that serve the needs of the whole district.
How has your Christian faith shaped your life, and how can voters expect it to influence your approach to public office?
My Christian faith has taught me that every person is a child of God and deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. It guides how I interact with others and reminds me to listen carefully, even when people have different perspectives.
During my 20 years as an educator in Brevard, I have taught students from all backgrounds. Some had every resource they needed, while others faced significant challenges, including homelessness. Every student deserved the same care, support, and opportunity to succeed.
Voters can expect me to bring those same values to public office by treating people fairly, listening to the community, and always putting students first. My faith shapes my character and commitment to service, integrity, and compassion.
