Planned Parenthood and Government Funding: A Moral and Constitutional Concern

The U.S. government allocates approximately $800,000 to Planned Parenthood. However, the name “Planned Parenthood” is arguably a misnomer. Rather than helping families plan for parenthood, the organization has become known primarily for offering abortion services—effectively removing “planning” from the process of bringing life into the world.
Today, the scope of services has expanded further to include government-funded gender reassignment procedures. This shift raises serious ethical and religious concerns for many Americans.
Margaret Sanger, the founder of what would become Planned Parenthood, coined the term “birth control” in 1914 and established the American Birth Control League. While her efforts were framed as advancing women’s health, critics argue that these initiatives have evolved into something far beyond their original intent.
From a biblical perspective, such practices appear to conflict with divine design. Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 describe homosexual acts as “an abomination,” and Romans 1:26–27 refers to the abandonment of natural relations as “shameful” and “unnatural.” In that context, one might ask: Does not gender reassignment likewise defy God’s will?
Most troubling is the fact that this funding comes from taxpayer dollars—without direct consent or a national referendum. When did “We the People” agree to finance practices that many view as morally objectionable and spiritually damaging?
This is not simply a political issue—it is a moral and cultural one. At the very least, the American people deserve a voice in how their money is spent, especially when the policies in question touch so deeply on questions of faith, life, and human identity.
Here in Brevard, we would do well to remember the rallies and marches held along US A1A in the 1990s that led to the closure of our only abortion providing clinic. They were a powerful example of our faith—but the battle is not finished. Now more than ever, it is our responsibility to remain steadfast and follow God's plan.
