On the Ballot: Timi Tucker, Candidate for Brevard County Judge, Group 3

In our “On the Ballot” series, Christians of Brevard is asking local Christian candidates for office five simple questions about faith, leadership, and public service.

On the Ballot: Timi Tucker, Candidate for Brevard County Judge, Group 3

Timi DeAnn Tucker is a wife, mother, Christian, attorney, and breast cancer survivor. She moved to Brevard County as a child in the 1970s and is a highly experienced trial attorney who appears in court nearly every day. A former president of the Brevard County Bar Association, she volunteers with Brevard County Legal Aid and Eckerd Connects. Timi decided to run for county judge after seeing judges make decisions based on societal influences rather than the law. She and her family attend Hope Lutheran Church.

Why are you running for Brevard County Judge?

The role of a Judge is to follow the law and apply it fairly and equally to all citizens. When I look around, I see judges succumbing to societal pressure, to create law that fits with what they believe the law should be rather than what the law is. When I saw this happening, I asked myself "if I don’t stand up for what is right and just, who will?" So, I decided to step away from my successful private law practice that I founded twenty-two years ago to serve our community. The community where our family, friends, and neighbors live.

What does it mean to you to be a Brevard resident?

We have a great community. I moved here in the 1970s with my Mom and my Sister. My Mom only knew one person in Cocoa Beach. She moved here without a job and with two children in tow. She and I worked as the substitute janitor crew at Cape View Elementary School to make ends meet. Then we started cleaning houses after I got out of school in the afternoon. Through her sacrifice and hard work, I became the first person in my family to attend college. I eventually earned my Juris Doctorate and passed the Florida Bar. Brevard County is where my American Dream was created and fulfilled. I am who I am because God placed me in Brevard County, Florida.

What is the top issue driving your campaign, and what can voters expect you to do about it?

Every citizen deserves a judge who will follow the law with fairness and impartiality. Most persons will not have a lot of interaction with judges, but those who do should be in front of a judge who respects the law and applies the law as it is written to the facts of their case in a timely, efficient manner. I will follow the law as written and treat all citizens respectfully, fairly, and equally.

What is one misconception people may have about you or your platform?

A lot of people don’t realize that they can research judicial candidates just as easily as they can research other candidates. Through the Brevard County Clerk of Court, you can do a name search of each candidate going back twenty or so years to determine whether the candidate has a criminal history, has been arrested, has been sued for non-payment of debt, and/or has had an injunction for protection against domestic violence filed against him or her.

How has your Christian faith shaped your life, and how can voters expect it to influence your approach to public office?

As I write my answers to these questions, I am listening to Z88.3. My Christian faith requires that all citizens be treated respectfully, equally, and fairly. I know that "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).
