OBITUARY — Former U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, a longtime congregant and trustee of Rockledge Methodist Church, passed away Saturday at the age of 78.

Born in Washington, D.C., on December 18, 1947, Posey moved to Rockledge in 1956 after his father accepted an engineering position working on the Delta rocket program. He graduated from Cocoa High School and later earned an associate degree from Brevard Community College, now Eastern Florida State College, in 1969.

Posey began his public service career on the Rockledge City Council before serving in the Florida House, Florida Senate, and ultimately the U.S. House of Representatives from 2009 to 2025. Throughout his career, he was known for his outspoken Christian faith and conservative advocacy, including co-sponsoring the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act requiring medical care for infants surviving attempted abortions.

Posey remained active in Christian ministry and civic life throughout his life, at one time serving as Rockledge Methodist’s Youth Fellowship Leader and as Florida chapter president of United Methodist Men. He was also scheduled to speak at the upcoming Christ is King Conference hosted by Glory of God Anglican Church in June, where he was to deliver remarks on “Politics and the Kingdom of God.”

Posey retired from Congress in 2025, concluding a public service career that spanned nearly five decades. He is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Katie, and their daughters, Cathi and Pamela.
