Mayor Reflects on Grandfather's Ministry in Melbourne Faith, Family and Fatherhood Proclamation

MELBOURNE — The City of Melbourne officially recognized June as Faith, Family and Responsible Fatherhood Month during Tuesday night's City Council meeting, encouraging citizens to "unite, celebrate and uplift" the fundamental community pillars during the month of Father's Day.

Before presenting the proclamation, Mayor Paul Alfrey remarked on its personal significance to him, remembering his grandfather, a Baptist preacher who built Myrtle Baptist Church off Brandywine Lane in Melbourne. Alfrey shared that his childhood experience shaped his appreciation for the role faith plays in the community and noted appreciation for the council's continued practice of opening meetings with an invocation.

Christians from churches and fellowships across Melbourne and Brevard County showed up to support the Faith, Family and Responsible Fatherhood Month proclamation.

“We talk about what’s really important, and that’s family, faith ... and community,” Alfrey said.

Melbourne is the latest of over 30 Florida municipalities to adopt the recognition, with a statewide proclamation issued by Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this week. In Brevard County, Melbourne joins Palm Bay, Satellite Beach and Titusville in making the proclamation official.

Special guests recognized during Melbourne’s presentation included Michael Stover of Valor Media, Ben Bowman of Reformation Bible Church, Jason Storms of Operation Save America and William Brown of Citizens for Christ.

In emotional remarks, Stover shared how growing up in a broken home and later losing his father at a young age shaped his understanding of the importance of faith and fatherhood. He credited his Christian faith with transforming his own life and preparing him for marriage and fatherhood.

Bowman thanked city leaders for the recognition and emphasized the importance of fathers and families to the health of a community.

“When fathers are faithful, families flourish. And when families flourish, cities can actually prosper,” Bowman said.

The proclamation has seen wide interest online from local citizens since Alfrey announced plans to issue it at a May council meeting. Posts by Christians of Brevard tracking the progress of Melbourne's proclamation and similar efforts across the county have generated thousands of views and engagements. That interest translated into a strong turnout Tuesday, with Christians representing churches and fellowships from across Melbourne and Brevard County attending in support.

Pastor Caleb Jacobsen of Beacon Baptist Church and his family were among the local Christians who attended in support.

Following the proclamation, the council recognized June as Men's Health Awareness Month and promoted an upcoming men's health summit at Eastern Florida State College, with an "off script" birthday recognition for Melbourne Police Acting Commander Steven Sadoff, whom Alfrey praised as "an amazing father" and public servant.
